Sri Sri Tribal School gets Comp Lab!

Jai Gurudev!

The computer lab at Ghatsila Tribal (Middle) School (another sri sri tribal school project) started working from 4th October, 2009. It was a day to rejoice because now the Tribal Child in remote corner in a forest can get the benefit of latest technology to learn computers and learn through computers.

The lab has 20 machines (one for two children) in network. Full battery backup to ensure uninterrupted stabilized power supply to continue the class. The children will be able see the output of their efforts on net worked printers. We also have a MFD so that they may be able to learn fax, copy, print and scanning facilities.

The broadband connection is expected any day and then a new world will open to these children who have never traveled beyond their villages.

- Ghatshila is a sleepy little town in Jharkhand with the railway station so small that only one door of one coach fits on the platform when the train halts. This is a naxalite infested area where the only middle school is 20kms away and a teacher comes only once in a month because of the fear of the naxalites.

A Know your Child workshop was conducted for few teachers that this school has, followed by a week long training program.

- It feels nice to know and remember thatES!+ Chennai has contributed in a small way towards another tribal school in Meghalaya.

We raised money by selling loads of old newspapers and magazines collected from libraries and apartments (lots of families were amazed that youths are doing such work and they ended up donating cash and toys and clothes etc.). We would then struggle to hire a pull-cart or arrange a car to haul all the stuff to waste paper market. We also got kicked out from some and banished from other apartments for disturbing sleepy weekends of few residents. We collected and donated lots of books and held a big book fair at AGN.

It's a warm feeling to know that our little team effort will enable a few kids to be the 1st generation students from there family in some remote naxalite infested corner of our country. A candle has been lit and there will be more light in the times to come.
